Balinese Natural Birthing Center Threatened by Global Downturn

Mid-wife and clinic founder Robin Lim is a legend in the world of women's maternity health. I have heard of her from Port-au-Prince in Haiti to New-York to Denpasar. Recently I received a note that her natural birthing clinic in Bali known as Bumi Sehat ("healthy mother earth") is in desperate need of operating funds.

Robin Lim: Gentle birth warrior for women and children

"Sorry. I haven't slept. We had five babies born overnight," says midwife Robin Lim greeting a couple who last night gave birth to their second child. The baby was born under the protection of Lim's vision for a three-pronged approach to childbirth - culture, nature and science - practiced by the Indonesian midwives at the Nyuh Kuning birthing clinic in Bali, run by Yayasan Bumi Sehat, or Healthy Mother Earth Foundation.

My Sister, A Statistic of Shame

If you google ‘Christine Jehle Kim,’ you will not find that she was a mother of two who had just been accepted into medical school --or, if things had been different: that she was a mother of three graduated from medical school.  But what you will find is that she was memorialized on the Safe Motherhood Quilt Project, the heart-child of midwife Ina May Gaskin.

Ibu Robin Lim & The Bumi Sehat Foundation

In Indonesian Ibu means mother and Ibu Robin Lim is a mother in every sense of the word…birth mother to 5 children, 2 children she was blessed with after their mother, a close friend tragically died and mother to one further young girl who was given to Robin and her husband Wil as a dying baby, but who today is a happy and healthy 4 and a half year old…8 beautiful, much loved children. These are Robin’s literal children… but countless other children, their mothers, families and communities have also been helped and blessed by the mother in Robin Lim.

Half-Angel Robin Lim: A Midwife from Iowa Delivers Babies in Bali
We're sitting on the balé, a raised pavilion in the middle of a family compound in Mas, a woodcarver's village. Ibu ("mother") Ketut sits on the edge, legs spread over a cloth to soak up amniotic fluid. Robin received Ketut's first baby, a girl of six with scars on her legs from a cooking oil accident. Robin puts her ear to Ketut's half-moon belly. The baby's fine.

Robin Lim and Bumi Sehat:
A lesson on welcoming life with love

In 2006 the maternal mortality in child birth, in Indonesia, was the highest amongst the member states of ASEAN. In Bali alone, the mortality ratio during child birth was double that of the country. A large part of these deaths which occur during pregnancy and childbirth are preventable through proper hygiene, pre-natal care and nutrition. simple matters to most of us yet often overlooked, or worse, unavailable in this part of the world.

Filipino Version of Chaos Theory: A Short Review of Robin Lim’s Butterfly People

It’s not easy to write a review for Butterfly People.
Don’t get me wrong. I didn’t say it’s a difficult read. Just, well, confusing. Robin Lim used a narrative voice that is easy to understand. No highfaluting adjectives and adverbs, no long streams of consciousness designed to confuse readers in between sentences that are five lines long. The context is pretty easy to relate to, especially if the reader is a Filipino, or better yet, a Filipino who is interested in historical fiction.
